As sad as it may be, this should NOT be a shock to anyone- Simon Cowell called off his engagement to Mezghan Hussainy. The X Factor creator broke the news to the U.K.’s newspaper The Mirror on Sunday.

According to the paper Cowell and Hussainy have not seen each other since Christmas and are “on a break.” He admitted that “it’s quite a complicated relationship.” Cowell was recently spotted over the New Year’s with ex-partner Sinitta and his mother. The music mogul told The Mirror, “We have had a break from each other, and we are still incredibly close. I’m vulnerable. It’s not on, it’s not off, it’s somewhere in the middle. I don’t know if I will ever get married, but I’m happy.”

The pair met on American Idol in 2003, but did not begin dating until 2009. In 2010 they were engaged, but rumors started circulating in 2011 that the couple had major issues. Cowell admitted that they may not be together, but he’s still supporting her. “I don’t pay them off,” he said. “but if you have been with someone long enough, there is a responsibility. You can’t say one minute you can live this type of life and then the light goes off.”  Keep in mind, this is only the rule when it comes to his serious girlfriends.

For now Cowell is focused on returning to Britain’s Got Talent as a judge and perfecting The X Factor USA.
